A Lot of Education Going On!

It has been a busy and exciting fall season for MSW Education.

Worship Technology Workshop Update:

Last month, in conjunction with Desert View Bible Church (Phoenix), the MSW team offered a very successful Worship Technology Workshop. This free event, led by Rob Moore and Caleb Kilian (with support from Dwight Kilian, Bob Fabey, and Russell Schmidt), helped participants learn more about sound reinforcement and visual media and their use in sacred spaces. With the guidance of Rob and Caleb, we all gained a better understanding of how an effective use of technology can support and elevate worship.

Plans are already being made with Mike Bohlmann and our other friends at Desert View Bible Church for the next MSW Education workshop to be presented there. Stay tuned for an announcement soon regarding a spring workshop for church musicians.

Valley Jazz Cooperative - Performances and Auditions

On a different front, the Valley Jazz Cooperative program continues to develop. Earlier this month, the East Valley Jazz Cooperative presented a combo performance at Spirit of Joy Lutheran Church (Gilbert), under the direction of Russell Schmidt. The 11/06/16 concert was well-attended and the students performed beautifully. In addition to performing pieces by jazz legends such as John Coltrane and Freddie Hubbard, the students also performed two free improvisations based on programmatic nouns suggested by the audience: Oak Leaves and Rainbow.

The performance of Oak Leaves/Rainbow led to a wonderful breakdown of the usual barrier between performers and audience, as those in attendance engaged in discussion with Russ regarding the free improvisations they had just heard. What began as a concert quietly morphed into more of a lecture-recital, as the ideas behind free improvisation---and the creative opportunities afforded the students in such settings---were discussed openly.

The audience thoroughly enjoyed the entire performance that day. And, after the event, many attendees expressed great admiration to Russ for what the Valley Jazz Cooperative is doing to develop the creative impulses and artistic gifts of its students.

So where can you next see a Valley Jazz Cooperative group in concert? At the end of this month at Mesa Community College!

At 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, November 30th, the East Valley Jazz Cooperative and the Mesa Community College Jazz Band will share a date at the MCC Performing Arts Center (1520 South Longmore, Mesa, AZ 85202). After the EVJC performs to open the concert, the MCC Jazz Band will take the stage, under the direction of MCC alum Paul Brewer.  CLICK Image for flyer. >>>>>>

For more information about the performance or to purchase tickets ($6/$7/$8), visit the MCC events page here. And as the VJC is currently in the middle of another audition cycle, parents of young musicians interested in participating in the East Valley Jazz Cooperative are encouraged to learn more about the program here (About EVJC) and here (VJC Audition Info). (The Valley Jazz Cooperative is an educational initiative of Music Serving the Word Ministries.)

One Glorious Morning

The beautifully improvised music and spoken word was not all there was to experience.  As I sat enjoying the music, I noticed the birds, as they seemed to sing with the music.  I found myself getting lost in the beauty that surrounded us as we worshipped, [more]
