  • How visual media can enhance worship
  • How lighting impacts visual media (and the worship experience)

The VALLEY JAZZ COOPERATIVE Resumes This Month!

Audition and Program Details

The Valley Jazz Cooperative, an educational initiative of Music Serving the Word Ministries, is resuming later this month following a very successful first term.

Auditions for the East Valley Jazz Cooperative are being held in two locations:

  • Spirit of Joy Lutheran Church (1159 N. Greenfield Rd., Gilbert, AZ 85234-2845) and
  • The Performing Arts Center of Mesa Community College (1833 W Southern Ave., Mesa, AZ 85202)

Details regarding EVJC auditions may be found at this web page:
AUDITION INFO (
http://www.valleyjazz.org/audition-info)

Back on May 11th, the East Valley Jazz Cooperative had its debut concert at The Nash, the leading jazz performance venue in downtown Phoenix. This 10-piece group included talented students from various school music programs, including Desert Mountain High School, Desert Vista High School, Gilbert High School, Mountain View High School, and Sandra Day O'Connor High School. The group even performed a couple of pieces with trumpeter Fred Forney, saxophonist Brice Winston, and trombonist Mike Lake, affording students the opportunity to make music side-by-side with some of the leading professional jazz artists in the state.

This special event was documented by MSW’s own Caleb Kilian. You can find his photographs of the performance at this web page:
VALLEY JAZZ PHOTO GALLERY (http://www.valleyjazz.org/photo-galleries)

As always, participation in the East Valley Jazz Cooperative program is provided FREE OF CHARGE to students. VJC Director/MSW Coordinator of Education Russell Schmidt anticipates the group will be a combo during the fall (when AZ marching band season is in full swing). It will then expand to become a jazz ensemble after a second round of student auditions scheduled for mid-November.

Valley Jazz CooperativeThe East Valley Jazz Cooperative rehearses weekly at Mesa Community College's Performing Arts Center. Music Serving the Word Ministries and the Valley Jazz Cooperative are most grateful to Paul Brewer and the whole team at MCC for their partnership in this unique educational program. And stay tuned for exciting news in the next month regarding the West Valley Jazz Cooperative!

There’s even more to come…!

Debut Concert - East Valley Jazz Cooperative

For the past two months, talented students from across the East Valley have been rehearsing with MSW Coordinator of Education Russell Schmidt in an ensemble called the East Valley Jazz Cooperative. Participants auditioned to be part of this new educational program and have been drawn from various school music programs, including Desert Mountain High School, Desert Vista High School, Gilbert High School, Mountain View High School, and Sandra Day O'Connor High School. Additionally, two home-schooled students are participating in the group.

Following weekly rehearsals held at Mesa Community College's Performing Arts Center, the 10-piece East Valley Jazz Cooperative will offer its debut performance this week at the Nash in downtown Phoenix. The performance is scheduled for Wednesday night (5/11) at 7:00 p.m. The students will perform Hora Decubitus (Charles Mingus), Solar (Miles Davis), Cascades (Oliver Nelson), Impressions (John Coltrane), and Sonnymoon For Two (Sonny Rollins), among other great, classic jazz selections.

Additionally, the EVJC will be joined on the program by the Russell Schmidt Sextet, featuring trumpeter Denny Monce, saxophonist Brice Winston, trombonist Mike Lake, bassist Dwight Kilian, and drummer Dom Moio. The performance will conclude with two pieces that combine the EVJC with members of the sextet, allowing the students to have a side-by-side musicmaking experience with some of the leading professional jazz artists in the state.

Tickets for this event are priced at $10 for general admission, $5 for college students (w/ ID), and free for those 18 & under. Proceeds from ticket sales will support youth summer education programs at the Nash. Tickets are available at thenash.org or at the door on the evening of the performance. The Nash is located at 110 E. Roosevelt St., Phoenix, AZ 85004.

The EVJC is part of the Valley Jazz Cooperative program, an educational initiative of Music Serving the Word. So come on downtown to the Nash this Wednesday night to support these gifted, creative young people in the first public performance by any Valley Jazz Cooperative ensemble. And visit valleyjazz.org to learn more about Valley Jazz Cooperative educational programs, as well as ways to support VJC activities. Thanks!
